Class is 2 sessions long, each 3 hours for a total of 6 hours.
Instructor: Sophie Hood
Learn the basics of working with high stretch fabric, such as those fabrics used for activewear and swim wear while making the Aires activewear legging by Colette from the Seamwork Magazine.
All techniques will involve using a regular home sewing machine so that you can further explore making more leggings or using this fabric to make other activewear at home!
You should be comfortable cutting out a paper pattern on your own to take this class since you will piece together and cut the paper pattern out before the first class (you do not need to cut the fabric, just the pattern). If you have questions or concerns about that please contact the studio.
Pattern from Seamwork magazine
You will need to purchase and print pattern at home. It is suggested that you print it at a copy shop to get a single print out, however if you print at home on 8.5″ x 11″ paper you will need to piece the pieces together to create your final pattern. Either way, once printed you will need to select your size and cut the paper pattern out in advance of the class (you do not need to cut the fabric, just the paper pattern). If you have questions about sizing please contact the studio!
1 spool of matching all-purpose polyester sewing thread
2 yards of 1/4″ wide knit elastic
Fabric – yardage as specified by pattern for your size. Please note that pattern is pretty true to size for what you normally wear in store bought clothing. Any mid to heavy weight athletic fabric with 4-WAY STRETCH (at least 25%) such as nylon, spandex and rayon blends such as ponte knit and milliskin. Optional contrast panel (can be stretch mesh or other contrast). You must follow these guidelines for the fabric for the pant to fit properly. Please remember that you are making a pant, so although a thinner swimsuit type fabric could work, the pants are not lined and will be very showy for your body inside. So if you want more coverage make sure the weight of the fabric is a bit thicker. Milliskin is definitely a great option and can be purchased online from spandex world.
