Class is 4 sessions total, each 2.5 hours long, for a total of 10 hours of class time.
Beginner student? Don’t be afraid to take this class! Even with beginner level construction and sewing experience you can learn and understand draping concepts! You just need a basic understanding of clothing construction and an interest in learning this side of the construction process!
In this class you will learn the basics of draping, a process of positioning, pinning and marking fabric on a dress form to develop a garment’s structure directly on the dress form. In draping, designers follow a sketch or design concept and play with the way a fabric falls on the form to conceptualize and create a design. This is an alternative method (to flat pattern) to begin the apparel design process, but is also used along with flat pattern techniques to create the sewn garment.
You will learn basic draping skills including taping the form and using style lines, prepping muslin, blocking fabric and understanding fabric grain and how it affects drape. You will have the opportunity to drape several basic bodice and skirt styles.
Dress forms will be provided for use in this class (these will not necessarily be to your size – but you will simply be learning concepts that you can apply later to your own size form if you choose to purchase one; you will also be learning skills that will help you better understand garments and pattern design). However, if you have a dress form you would like to bring to use in the class please let me know, and if you would like to purchase one before the class in your size to bring, I am happy to help you with options for purchasing etc.
