Cathedral Window
Learn to create this beautiful, textured patchwork effect – a technique done almost entirely by hand. Over this two-session class, we will learn to do this block the traditional way, with a fabric folding technique, just a tiny touch of machine sewing, and a long stretch of calm, slow stitching together. Perfect for anyone interested in traditional technique or slow crafting – but please be mindful that this design will require an element of precision and a reasonable comfort level with needle and thread.
This class will make an 18” finished piece that can be hung on a wall or used as a pillow front. Cathedral Windows are modular and can be added to in any direction to make any size you wish, simply multiply the materials to expand the size
Note: There is a break between the 2 sessions to allow time for homework between session 1 and 2
Intermediate – requires only very basic machine experience, but good comfort with cutting and pressing accurately, and general hand-sewing technique. As always, if you aren’t sure, just ask us!
Background fabric: 1 1/4 yards quilting cotton*, cut into sixteen 10” squares ahead of class
Contrast fabric: 1/4 yard or fat quarter, OR scraps!, cut into twenty-four 2.5” squares ahead of class
Note: you may need to fussy cut your 2.5” squares on point if you have directional prints! We will not use these until class 2, so feel free to bring the fabrics and talk about it with Julie before cutting!
*please note that you can keep sewing and make yours bigger if you like! If you think that might happen, make sure you choose a background fabric that you can get more of!
