Construction Techniques

In this 4 part series of classes learn new construction techniques and improve upon the ones you have tried before with tips and tricks to hone your skills.  We will focus on various seaming techniques, pocket constructions and zipper settings so you can better utilize these skills in future projects!

Some of the items we will be exploring….

seaming techniques – French, flat felled, serger, clean finish, bound edge
pockets- patch, inseam, welt
zippers – middle/centered/railroad, lapped, fly (jeans), invisible
Fitting Details – Dart, Gathers, Easing, Tuck, Pleats

Pre-Requisites

This is a beginner friendly class, but not a class for newbies.  You should know how to thread and operate a machine, and understand basic sewing and pressing and understand seam allowance and how to sew an even seam allowance.

Supplies
  • 3 yards of quilting cotton or muslin
  • 1/2 yard of woven white light weight fusible such as SF101
  • Matching all-purpose thread (or you can go with contrast if you want to see your stitching)
  • one 7-9″ invisible zipper (if longer that is ok, we can shorten)
  • two coil zippers 7″ long (if longer that is ok and can be shortened as long as it’s a “coil” zipper)
  • one 5″ jeans(metal) zipper
