This is a more challenging bag pattern for the intermediate – advanced student. And there are a few choices that can be made to either simplify or make the bag more challenging depending on the student. This sort of bag pattern has more components, and will teach the young sewist new skills as well as sewing a zipper, how to make a cargo pocket and optional quilting and optional inside binding and the project should last the whole semester (fall, winter or spring).
Level : Intermediate – Advanced
Time Needed: 7-8 sessions (a full series)
Supply List: Note – all fabrics should be quilting cotton
NO PATTERN REQUIRED – Studio has the pattern
Main Fabric (blue in my sample) – 1 yard
Contrast 1 (Orange in my sample) – 1/2 yard
Lining (inside bag, yellow in my sample) – 1 yard
Pocket/Flap – 1/4 yard or a fat quarter
1/2 yard of 45″ wide fusible fleece
1/3 yard of SF101 interfacing
2 spools of all-purpose thread
1 zipper, 26″ long, closed bottom – not metal, not separating, not invisible. You may also choose to use zipper by the yard if you like the effect of a metal zipper as in my sample
OPTIONAL: For a bigger challenge for the more advanced student purchase 1/2 yard of a quilting cotton to use as the inside binding. It could be the same fabric as used in another component and then just add on to the total yardage needed.
Please note if you would like to attach snaps to your pocket flaps there is a $5 fee you can pay to Cut & Sew Studio to use the studio snaps as we have a special tool for attaching and need the snaps that match. Please check in advance that the snaps are available.
