Kimono Class

Instructor Michael Kouri has been selected to do the Pittsburgh Opera Fashion show fundraiser this winter, which requires 30 looks inspired from the operas that the Pittsburgh Opera will be showing in 2025, and one of them is Madame Butterfly. Inspired by his work for that show, in this class he will teach you how to make a basic kimono! A fun and easy project that teaches you how to use your personal measurements to create a traditional style kimono.

Pre-Requisites

This class is advanced beginner-intermediate level.

Student must understand how to thread and operate a sewing machine and have some basic sewing skills with at least a few simple projects so that they have a basic understanding of cutting, sewing even seams etc.

Supplies

3 yards of fabric for a short kimono (or)
5 yards of fabric for a full length kimono
(preferably a woven cotton fabric)
Matching thread – 1 spool all-purpose

Any width of fabric will work but modifications will be made and there could be some limitations based on your choice.

If you get 45″ wide fabric and want a full length robe you definitely need 5 yards.

With 60″ wide fabric you have more options and need at least 3 yards.
Since you are drafting the pattern Michael will work with each student individually based on the yardage they purchase and what their limitations are.
