Trail Jacket with Rebekah Joy of Flux Bene
In this class you will learn:
-
Cutting & sewing curves
-
Hand quilting curves with cotton sashiko thread
-
Considerations for upcycling vs. sewing from scratch
-
Combining different fabrics together for visual interest
-
Creating lined patch pockets
-
Making & using straight grain hem tape
*Please note that some outside of class work on the hand quilting will need to be done at home in order to accomplish the jacket in the time frame of the class.

This class is beginner friendly. It is not for the newbie sewist who has never sewn before, so you must have at least taken the Intro to Sewing class or have similar beginner level experience.
You will need to purchase a digital pattern for the class which you will print at home and tape together PRIOR to the first class! If you have questions about this please contact the studio. Rebekah will be sending instructions regarding pattern printing prior to the class so that everyone has patterns properly scaled and ready for class.
Materials:
-
1 second hand shirt in a heavier weight- thick flannel, denim or heavy canvas are good choices
-
The shirt can be oversize, or slightly small in the torso, but should fit you well in the shoulders. If you don’t have a shirt on hand, try looking at thrift stores, on Poshmark, Depop, Ebay, or at the Vintage Mixer at the Convention Center on November 7th & 8th.
-
-
½ yard of fabric for the tops of the pockets & back quilt- this is the blue fabric in the photo sample.
-
¼ yard (or fat quarters, or scraps) of two fabrics in complementary colors. You can use warm colors like in the sample, or any colors / patterns that you are excited about.
-
***Optional – 1/2 yard of fabric if you would like to add side panels to your jacket. See note below about choosing fabric.
-
Additional scrap fabric to line your pockets and back quilt – this is a great way to use up an old bed sheet or an old fabric that you don’t particularly like
-
1 skein sashiko thread in your color choice
-
A couple of long hand sewing needles
-
Spool of all purpose sewing thread
-
Sketchbook Jacket / Trail Jacket Pattern from FLUX BENE & the Radiating Warmth Pocket Pattern. NOTE: If you already have the sketchbook jacket pattern you will only need to get the pocket pattern!
**All fabrics need to be woven (not stretchy). Quilting cotton and linen are great choices. If you choose to add side panels to your jacket- the fabric that you use to make the panels should be close in weight to the fabric that your shirt is made from.
